More bear sightings in Hammonds Plains area

A few days after a bear wandered onto a man’s patio, residents in the Hammonds Plains Road area have reported more sightings.
At least three people reported seeing bears, although they may not be all of the same bear.
RCMP Cpl. Joe Taplin says residents need to make sure they’re not leaving out any sources of food.
“Store garbage in containers with tight fitting lids,” he says. “And don’t put your garbage out until the morning of pickup.
Greasy barbeques and bird seed will also lure bears.
However, Jenny Costello with the Department of Natural Resources says this level of bear activity is normal.
“June is always the month where there’s maybe not as much in the woods,” she says. “Bears always prefer natural food.”
She says if you see a bear, even if it’s just passing through, give the Department of Natural Resources a call.
