The Nova Scotia Correctional facility in Burnside remained in lockdown Wednesday after a disturbance Tuesday night that left one inmate with stab wounds.
Guards ordered a lockdown just after 9 p.m. when three inmates were involved in a dispute that ended with one prisoner with three stab wounds.
“When that lockdown took place, we had 17 offenders in West 2, another unit that refused to be locked down,” says David Horner, the executive director with corrections services. “When they refused to be locked down, they were causing a disturbance, refusing to go to their cells, breaking sprinklers and recreational equipment.”
The prisoners were back in their cells after a three-hour standoff. The inmate who was stabbed was treated in hospital and has since returned to custody. The weapon used has not yet been found and the jail lockdown will remain in effect while a search for it continues.
Police were called to assist Tuesday night but they remained outside the facility while jail staff dealth with the disturbances.
