One hospitalized after inmate disturbance at Burnside Jail

Department of Justice officials are assessing the damage after an inmate disturbance at the Burnside jail.

Department spokesperson Sherri Aikenhead said the trouble started around 10 p.m. Tuesday and involved 17 inmates.

There was a stabbing which sent one man to hospital, but it’s not clear whether that’s what triggered the ruckus.

Halifax Regional Police Sergeant Paul Robertson says they got a call around 10 p.m.

“The request was to stand-by the correctional institution because they had a disturbance of some sort inside,” said Sgt. Robertson.

He says police never entered the jail and they cleared the area around midnight after being informed by jail staff everything was under control.

Aikenhead says there has been some property damage, but no fires were set in the jail.

A news conference is scheduled for later this morning to provide more information.
