Advance polls bustling in Yarmouth, Glace Bay byelections

The recent MLA expense scandal, which lead to the resignation of two provincial politicians, appears to have voters in Glace Bay and Yarmouth coming out in droves.

The Herald reports about twice as many people as usual have voted in advance polls for today’s byelections.

Dana Doiron with Elections Nova Scotia says that trend won’t necessarily translate to general polls, noting that many of those who intend to vote like to get it out of the way early.

Voters in Glace Bay have five options to replace former Liberal MLA Dave Wilson, including his son. There are six candidates running in Yarmouth for the seat held by Tory Richard Hurlburt.

Wilson stepped down after declining an interview with Auditor General Jacques Lapointe during an investigation of some MLA expense claims. Hurlburt quit soon  after criticism of an $8,000 generator installed at his home.

The polls close at 7 p.m. today. Results will be posted on the Elections Nova Scotia website.
