Major earthquake in N.S. unlikely

Local scientists say the chances of Nova Scotia experiencing an earthquake like the one in Central Ontario and Quebec are slim.

Although, surprisingly enough, Dalhousie University Earth Sciences professor Georgee Grujeck says Eastern Canada has over 400 earthquakes a year.

Grujeck says that’s no need for alarm.  He says the earth is more likely to rumble well below the surface of the ocean.

“There might be minor earthquakes off of Nova Scotia,” he says, “but mostly offshore of Nova Scotia, between Nova Scotia and Newfoundland.”

Canada’s worst earthquake was off the Grand Banks in 1929.  It registered 7.2 on the Richter scale and a subsequent tsunami killed 28 people in Newfoundland and one person in Cape Breton.

Grujeck says there are fault lines in Eastern Ontario and Southern Quebec and that is why there are more quakes in those regions.
