Dartmouth company laying off 35 workers

A Dartmouth company that makes furniture for Ikea is laying off 35 workers.

The announcement comes only three months after Scanwood
Canada Ltd. received a $4.7 million provincial government loan.

The Herald reports Scanwood is bringing in automation that will require fewer workers.

The company’s executive chairman also says the firm has been losing money for the last 18 months.

The paper quotes an unnamed Scanwood worker as saying “you could hear a pin drop” when the employees got the bad news.
