Decision on convention centre not far away: minister

The Minister of Infrastructure Renewal says he wants to make a quick decision on funding the new convention centre, once cabinet gets the final business plan.

Bill Estabrooks says developer Rank Inc. has a deadline of July 19th for submitting a detailed proposal.

He says he expects cabinet to move soon after that.

“I would prefer it to be quickly,” he said. “We’ve had lots of input and lots of debate
on the topic. Nova Scotians, Haligonians in particular, are looking forward to the decision on where we’re going with the convention centre. So let’s get it done.”

Estimates suggest the new facility could cost anywhere from $300 to $500 million.

The province hasn’t said yet whether it would provide funding.
