Man, woman in critical condition after double shooting

A man and woman are being treated in Halifax for life-threatening injuries after what appears to be an attempted murder-suicide in New Germany.
A witness tells the Herald it happened around noon Wednesday when a man got out of his van in front of Barry’s Freshmart grocery store. He smashed out the window of a van in the parking lot, shot the woman inside and then turned the gun on himself.
Local residents say the pair are a well-known couple who had recently separated, but RCMP are not confirming identities at this point.
Cst. Les Kakonyi said only that the man and woman are known to each other.
“This was certainly not a random act,” he said. “Police are still on scene and are in the preliminary stages of the investigation.”
Kakonyi says police haven’t yet pinned down the exact motive for the shooting.
