Thousands pay tribute to fallen Glace Bay soldier

The people of Cape Breton came out in force to say goodbye to a local man they’re calling a hero.

An estimated 10,000 people lined the highway Tuesday night from the Sydney airport to a Glace Bay funeral home in tribute to Sgt. James “Jimmy” MacNeil.

The 28-year-old was killed by an IED while on a foot patrol in Afghanistan on June 20.

Sheldon MacNeil with the Glace Bay legion tells the CBC MacNeil paid the ultimate price, but he’ll be remembered by the people in his hometown of Glace Bay for years to come.

Nadine Navarole, MacNeil’s cousin, says the family was overwhelmed and comforted by the show of support.
