Electricity hike “shocking” to retirees

There’s already concern being expressed about Nova Scotia Power’s planned rate hike next year.

NSP wants to hike residential rates by 12 percent and industrial rates by 18 percent.

Bill VanGorder is president of C.A.R.P. Nova Scotia, representing retired people.

“Twelve percent, to C.A.R.P. Nova Scotia, is just unbelievable,” he said. “In this day and age when people are worried about one and two percent, for the power company to talk about 12 percent just shocked all our C.A.R.P. members.”

Al Dominie is a power industry consultant. He says it’s still early, but any increase will hurt people. But he also says if we want a cleaner environment, this is just the beginning.

“This whole environmental issue, what we’re seeing right now, is perhaps the tip of what could be a pretty big iceberg down the road.”

The UARB will hold a power rate hearing in October and any increase would go into effect January 1.
