Harbour beaches re-open

The all clear has been given to swim again in the waters of Halifax Harbour.
Halifax’s sewage treatment plant went back on-line last week after a meltdown in January 2009 resulted in raw sewage flooding the facility.
Three different water tests this week have cleared the harbour waters for swimming again according to Harbour Solutions spokesman James Campbell.
“As of eleven o’clock this [Friday] morning the beaches at Black Rock and Dingle Park are open to supervised swimming,” said Campbell.
Tests this week at the Dingle produced coliform levels of five per 100 millilitres of water and four per 100 at Black Rock Beach.
That’s well below the safe-to-swim standard of 200 units per 100 millilitres.
Lifeguards are now on the job at both beaches.
Mayor Peter Kelly says he plans to take a dip sometime within the next couple of weeks in a public event.
