Multicultural Fest marks the end of a busy week in Halifax

It’s been quite the kickoff to summer this week in Halifax with the royal visit and the International Fleet Review.
You might be thinking it’s time to take it easy, but the week’s not done yet.
The annual Multicultural Festival starts Friday and runs through the weekend.
Mayor Peter Kelly says it has certainly been a phenomenal week. The Queen’s visit and the fleet review brought thousands of visitors to the city and millions of dollars to the local economy.
“It could be high as 40-plus million dollars,” he said. “I know that with the naval fleet it’s actually about a 30 million dollar income for the province and for the folks downtown who own the restaurants and bars and shops and things.”
Navy public affairs spokesman Major Paul Doucet says ships taking part in the fleet review began leaving Friday morning. They consider the event a huge success.
“It’s a little bit bittersweet,” he said. “Certainly we’re very happy with the way everything went, but of course it’s like when you have a lot of extended family in town and now it’s time for them to go home. It’s a little bit sad to see everybody leave.”
The Multicultural Festival gets underway this afternoon to end this busy week.
It runs until Sunday, down by Pier 21 in Halifax this year.
