Hours cut for 23 provincial sheriffs

A former Conservative justice minister is calling for government to come clean on what’s happening with the work hours of Nova Scotia sheriffs.
Murray Scott is worried about what it could mean for public safety.
The Cumberland South MLA says he’s heard the hours are being cut for provincial sheriffs. They are the workers responsible for prisoner transfers, among other things.
Justice officials confirm 23 sheriffs out of the 190 in the province will see their hours reduced.
Jennifer Gavin says a 2007 agreement was worked out with the union to convert casual positions to permanent ones.
A recent review showed an excess.
“We did an in depth analysis of our staff and found that there were some staffing levels that were over the amount that were required in some of our justice centres,” she said.
She says their numbers show there will be enough staff to ensure safety within the justice system.
