Heavy rains close harbour beaches

There’s no swimming in Halifax Harbour today because of the heavy rain over the last forty-eight hours.

Shaune MacKinlay with HRM says Blackrock Beach and Dingle Beach are closed because of the amount of storm water in the sewer system.

“When we have those days this is the normal operation of the plant,” she said.
“It can go into overflow mode in which it would go from outfalls and into the harbour.
In those cases we have to close the beaches until we have water tests back that say it’s again safe for swimming.”

MacKinlay doesn’t expect the closure to last too long now that the Halifax Wastewater Treatment Facility is back online. She notes the natural flushing of the harbour will help as well.
