Two days after a memo from Mayor Peter Kelly was leaked to the media, details are still coming out about the mayor’s warning to councillors to curb their drinking.
Kelly says at one point he took a councillor’s keys away to stop them from driving drunk.
“[We were] alerted by staff and members of council who brought a particular issue to our attention,” says Kelly. “And we responded accordingly.”
He says the response was to take the councillor’s car keys.
He also says he won’t deny that a councillor was clearly intoxicated at the city council swearing in ceremony following the 2008 election.
Kelly declined to name the councillors involved or if both events involved the same councillor.
“This is not about going after or trying to embarrass or point fingers at any particular councillor,” he says.
Meanwhile some councillors are taking the news a little harder than others. Rockingham councillor Debbie Hum teared up on CTV, saying that some councillors no longer trust Kelly’s leadership.
