Provincial government may tweak emissions standards

Energy Minister Bill Estabrooks says he thinks a variety of measures, including possibly revisiting emission standard goals, should be considered as the provincial government grapples with potential energy rate hikes.
Nova Scotia Power will go before provincial regulators in the fall asking for a power rate increase as high as 12 percent for residential users and 18 percent for businesses.
Estabrooks says it’s his opinion that “all things should be on the table” and that the government is obliged to do something to help many Nova Scotians make ends meet.
“Everything’s on the table, and I mean that in the most open, full out way I can express it,” he said. “As a politician you can announce targets and you can state policies but when it comes to people and policies it seems to me at times that people get lost in the shuffle.”
The utility says the increases are needed to help cover the cost of burning cleaner coal.
