There are new revelations today regarding the drinking issues at Halifax city hall.
Mayor Peter Kelly revealed last week he took a councillor’s car keys after an event at city hall, suspecting the person had been drinking. Kelly never revealed the councillor’s name, but today’s Chronicle Herald cites sources who say it was Peter Lund, the councillor for Hammonds Plains-St Margarets.
A friend of Lund’s told the paper the councillor wouldn’t respond to the report on the advice of his lawyer.
Two weeks ago the mayor sent a confidential memo to councillors cautioning them about alcohol abuse, their behaviour in public and drinking and driving. It’s believed the memo was prompted by the actions of four councillors in particular.
Today, Kelly tells News 95.7 the memo was about public safety, not laying blame – and he continues to refuse to name names.
“This was never about pointing fingers, finding fault, embarrassing anybody,” he said. “This was a reminder, a reflection of our responsibilities.”
Kelly has said he’s met with a few councillors about their alcohol consumption habits, but won’t say who they were. He’s also not happy that a name has been made public.
He denies accusations by Coun. Sue Uteck he leaked the memo to embarass some members of city council.
