Biomass plant could pollute more than coal: environmentalist

Environmental advocates say Nova Scotia Power’s proposed biomass plant could emit more carbon dioxide than a conventional coal-burning plant.
Jamie Simpson of the Ecology Action Centre told the Utility and Review Board Monday that new research suggests burning wood releases more greenhouse gases per energy unit than fossil fuels.
The proposed plant, a joint venture of Nova Scotia Power and Newpage Port Hawkesbury, would burn more than 600,000 metric tonnes of wood a year – which critics say isn’t sustainable.
Simpson says the project shouldn’t be approved without further review of the latest science.
The Herald reports a Nova Scotia Power director admitted Monday that the utility doesn’t have much biomass expertise, but noted the government supports the proposal.
