Regional councillors set for debate on shrinking council

Today’s regional council meeting is expected to include a lengthy debate over reducing the number of HRM councillors.
Up for consideration is a proposal to re-draw some boundaries and reduce the number of districts from 23 to 20.
Coun. Tim Outhit (Bedford) tells Metro Halifax that would mean adding a few thousand extra residents to each councillor’s district – which won’t affect them significantly.
Coun. Linda Mosher (Purcell’s Cove-Armdale) says she’s heard from plenty of residents, especially in rural areas, who are worried that fewer councillors could mean less representation.
Mosher says shrinking council won’t mean a reduction in costs because extra staff would be needed to cover the increased workload per councillor.
