Referendum needed on future Common concerts: resident

A Halifax man says the city should ask Halifax residents whether they want the Common turned into a permanent concert venue.

Aaron Doncaster isn’t happy that a part of the Common has been closed since late July because of staging and preparations for two concerts.

He tells CTV it’s public land – so the public should have a say in how it’s used.

“If there’s going to be future events like concerts or what have you then the government should actually go to the people in a legitimate referendum and ask the people if they want this to occur,” Doncaster said.

Coun. Jennifer Watts (Quinpool-Connaught) says she wants any future concerts with an audience of less than 30,000 moved to the Garrison Grounds.

The Common will re-open August 10.
