Black-legged ticks set up shop in fourth N.S. county

A provincial surveillance program has found black-legged ticks are comfortably settled in Pictou County.
The ticks carry Lyme disease, and the province’s deputy chief medical officer says Pictou residents need to start taking precautions.
The ticks were first found in the Pictou area in 2008, but recent studies show colonies are firmly established in Melmberby Beach, Kings Head, Pine Tree and Eggerton.
Entomologist Jeff Ogden says the public should be careful but not overly alarmed.
He tells CBC it’s safe to keep going in the woods – just do a close check of your skin and clothing at the end of the say.
Ticks are also established in Halifax, Lunenburg and Shelburne counties.
