Two sides seem to disagree on access to Busker funding

There’s a bit of a “he said she said” developing between the province’s tourism department and the Halifax Busker Festival. This week, the festival announced it likely could not continue because of a lack of funds, specifically provincial funds.
Festival producer Kim Hendricks says there’s been no cash for the festival’s operation for the last three years. “We got a letter once again denying support for this festival,” she says, adding there has been no explanation as to why there is no funding.
But the Tourism department’s John Summers begs to differ.
“We provided around 56 thousand dollars in support when you include both cash contributions and in kind marketing support,” he says. Summers also says his department does not want to see the event disappear.
When asked to respond, Hendricks acknowledged 5-thousand dollars were doled out for this year’s advertising budget. But she says that money doesn’t actually help to stage the Busker Festival.
The Halifax Busker Festival is in its 24th year and wraps up this weekend.
