Viola Desmond honoured with triple tribute

The New Glasgow woman who became a Canadian civil rights icon has received a triple honour.
Viola Desmond was arrested and jailed in 1946 for sitting in the whites-only section of the town theatre.
On Monday, the Herald reports New Glasgow officials dedicated a park bench to her memory, unveiled a downtown interpretive panel and a portrait of Desmond that will hang in Government House in Halifax.
Premier Darrell Dexter also presented the town with a copy of a free pardon granted to Desmond earlier this year.
Lt. Gov. Mayann Francis told the crowd the pardon is the first of its kind in Canada and applauded Nova Scotia for its efforts to atone for wrongdoings.
