HRM crime rates rise slightly in second quarter

New figures released by regional police show crime rates in HRM went up by three per cent in the second quarter of the year.

Violent crime, which includes murders, attempted murders, robberies and assaults dropped by more than eight per cent compared to the same period in 2009.

But property crimes like theft and break and enter went up by 11 per cent.

Police spokesman Brian Palmeter tells Metro the increase was linked to thefts from homes and vehicles.

He says most of the home invasions were a result of people leaving their doors or windows unlocked.
