Men seen shooting seals, possibly for pleasure

A Dalhousie University Marine Biologist says he was shocked to see a group of people recently shooting seals, apparently for pleasure, in the Bay of Fundy.

Greg Breed was hiking on Isle Haute in the Bay of Fundy last weekend when he saw some men firing into a seal colony from a boat.

Fishermen with a “harassment permit” are allowed to shoot seals if they’re damaging equipment. But Breed tells CBC the men didn’t have any fishing gear and were just shooting any animal that moved.

He took pictures and shouted at the men until they moved on.

Breed reported the incident to the federal Department of Fisheries and Oceans.
