Halifax firefighter named in defamation suit fired

A Halifax firefighter lost his job today, and he says it’s because he’s part of a civil defamation suit launched by the chief and deputy chief of the department.

Blair Cromwell had his job with Halifax fire for 12 years.

He has been on paid leave since June. That’s when he was named as a defendant in the suit alleging defamatory comments were posted in response a Coast.ca article alleging racism within the Halifax Fire Service.

But today, Cromwell says he got the call.

“Good jobs are hard to come by today, especially for black people in this province,” he said. “They just took mine away from me and I’m not about to lay down and allow that to happen without putting up a fight.”

As part of that fight Cromwell has posted the taped audio of his termination on Youtube.

Cromwell’s also filed a wrongful termination grievance with his union.

The city is not commenting on the firing.
