Councillor urges cooperation on swarmings

A Halifax councillor is offering some advice about staying safe on the streets of metro.

With recent violence in areas of central Halifax Coun. Dawn Sloane (Halifax-Downtown) is pleading for calm from residents – and suggesting some ways to avoid becoming a victim.

“I hope that this stops and we get back to having a civilized community,” she said. “Things were going very well. I just think that we all need to work together to make sure that we don’t have any more violence in our community. It has to stop, simple as that.”

She suggests walking in busy, well-lit areas, being aware of your surroundings and carrying a cell phone.

Most of the victims of the weekend attacks were following this guidelines, but Sloane says the advice is part of a broader plan.

“I’ve talked to the police they told me they’ve stepped up patrols,” she said.
“I wanted to put out that gentle reminder to people to take care of your neighbours, keep your eyes out for things that look a little suspicious and just basically get us back on track.”

Police say the attacks were random and unprovoked.

Experts say you should trust your instincts if you feel uncomfortable in a situation.
