Burnside jail locked down after assault

There has been another incident at the Burnside jail.  This time, a 39 year-old inmate is in hospital with what are described as potentially life-threatening injuries.

Constable Brian Palmeter tells News 95.7 the injuries were sustained after a fight with other inmates.  He says staff noticed the injured man sometime around 8 p.m. Thursday night.  The unit of the jail is still on lockdown.

Palmeter says the injuries are significant. “Part of the investigation is to determine exactly where the altercation took place and if any weapons were involved,” he says. “We’re still interviewing witnesses and reviewing videotape at this time.”

He says there are no specifics about the type of injuries the man has, but Palmeter does confirm there are a few leads about potential suspects. Palmeter says part of the investigation by police will also be to figure out exactly when the assault took place.

The Justice Department is also conducting an internal probe into the incident.
