Council approves new fees, fee increases

Regional council has approved a series of fee hikes related to planning and development.
The new fees and fee increases were approved in this year’s budget process and are expected to bring in $150,000 a year.
They include a 10 per cent increase in heritage and planning applications and fees of more than $700 for downtown development plan applications.
One that caused a few raised eyebrows was the variance application, which jumped to $500 from $100 dollars.
Coun. Bob Harvey (Lower Sackville) says quintupling a fee is going too far and notes that in most cases the cost of the application will exceed the cost of whatever’s being built.
Metro Halifax reports the new fees were passed unanimously.
