Mooseheads kick off roadtrip with win

A goaltenders dual it wasn’t.

The Halifax Mooseheads kicked off their Quebec roadswing with a stop in Baie Comeau and a 6-4 win.

Gabe Desjardins opened the scoring with a blistering wrist shot midway through the first period but the Drakkar would tie it before the end of the period. Carl Gelinas, Alex Souligny, Darcy Ashley added second period goals.

The Mooseheads opened up a 5-2 lead just 38 seconds into the third when Czech rookie Martin Frk buried one after a lovely pass Gelinas. However the Drakkar weren’t finished, bringing the score to just 5-4 with 1:10 left. Gerrard Grant iced the game with an empty netter.

Sixteen-year-old Frk had a goal and two assists and was named first star of the game. Meanwhile the Mooseheads had scoring input from thirteen different players.

Baie Comeau, who were fellow basement dwellers with the Mooseheads last season, have a similarly-styled team. Both teams are young, but with a lot of emerging talent and a knack for losing focus.

Wednesday’s game was the first in a four-game-in-fight-nights stint for the team. They play next on Friday night in Chicoutimi at 830 p.m., you can catch the game live on News 95.7 with the call from John Moore.
