MLA expenses will be online by year’s end

Nova Scotia taxpayers will be able to track their MLA’s spending habits by the end of the year.

Director of Administration Deborah Lusby says they are working a few bugs and hope to begin collecting the information for online posting by Nov. 1.

The website will have all the details of expensed purchases, except for one – the identity of the vendor.

“That’s my understanding,” said Speaker Charlie Parker. “The amount, the type of purchase, the date of purchase and so on [will be identified online], but not the actual vendor.”

Online expense reporting was recommended by the province’s auditor general after his February report exposed excessive and inappropriate MLA expenses.
