Mooseheads thump Rockets 6-1

Rookies chipped in, in a big way as the Halifax Mooseheads got scoring from six different players winning Sunday afternoon 6-1.

“We have a lot of offense that is starting to come, we have a young team but we can really score,” says Assistant Coach Jason Troini. “It’s a confidence boost for the rookies to score goals early.”

Rookie Matthew Boudreau opened the scoring at the 8:30 mark with a one-timer on a nice passing play from Trey Lewis and fellow rookie Luca Ciampini. The Moose were awarded an extended 5-on-3 power play late in the first period, and immediately off the draw Konrad Abeltshauser and Martin Frk with good puck movement set up Pascal Amyot for the one-timer to make it 2-0 going into the dressing room. Amyot, who was in Coach Cam Russell’s dog house coming into tonight’s game, garnered the game’s first star.

The fortunes didn’t get much better for PEI in the second period, when Travis Randell (wearing the captain’s C during the game) sent a laser-guided shot into the top shelf.

“Travis has tried several times to score a goal like that,” says Troini. “He caught Mosher cheating a bit and it looked natural.”

Charles Bety and rookie defenseman Simon Desmarais would add markers in the second to make it 5-0. Desmarais logged a lot of time.

“I don’t know if we’ve ever had a player who came in as a rookie and was so mobile,” says Troini. “He’s already making an impact for us.”

Evan Mosher was chased from the PEI net during the second intermission with Maxime Legace taking his spot between the posts. But rookie Darcy Ashley would would put a powerplay marker past Legace at 5:08.

Mooseheads goaltender Mathieu Corbeil wasn’t very busy with the Mooseheads out-shooting the Rocket 39-25. The Rocket broke Corbeil’s shutout bid with their only goal at 6:49, the power play goal went low on Corbeil’s trapper side from 15 feet out.

The Mooseheads were coming off a disappointing loss Friday, after leading for most of the game, they lost in a shootout to the Saint John Sea Dogs. Most of the Mooseheads were so sick they were throwing up on the bench.

The Mooseheads have a week off while they await the Montreal Juniors on Friday night at the Metro Centre. Game time is 7 p.m., you can catch all the action on News 95.7 with the pregame underway at 7:50 p.m. with play-by-play man John Moore.
