Protesters arrested at VPD Main St. headquarters

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – Three protesters have been arrested after refusing to end their occupation of the Vancouver Police Department’s Main St. headquarters Monday night.

They were demanding police take another look at what they fear police are simply dismissing as a suicide in the Downtown Eastside a few weeks ago. The group thinks the woman was pushed from a building and fell to her death.

Ashley Machiskinic, 22, was found dead behind the Regent Hotel. One of the protesters, Harsha Walia, says police need to take deaths in the neighbourhood seriously.

“There’s an increasing number of women and ongoing number of women who are found murdered and missing in the Downtown Eastside. And it hasn’t ended.”

The police department says the investigation into her death is ongoing. A number of vigils are taking place right across Canada Monday night, to honour missing and murdered women.
