No planned changes for Stanley Park’s safety

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – While the City of Delta has promised to clear parts of Mackie Park to make it safer after the deadly beating of a 15-year old Laura Szendrei, it doesn’t look like Stanley Park will get the same treatment.

After the beating of Ji Won Park back in 2002, the Vancouver Park Board considered installing 9-11 phones in the city’s crown jewel, but it was ruled too expensive and impractical back then.

Commissioner Aaron Jasper says the same applies today. “There were concerns that putting these phones in a thousand acre park could give a false sense of security, [and] in a crisis situation, trying to find the phone.”

Jasper says they’re not thinking of thinning out any of the dense forest, either. When it comes to personal safety, he encourages those who use the park to use common sense as a guide.
