Turkey dinner and road checks are on the menu this long weekend.
RCMP are ramping up their annual enforcement campaign called “Operation Impact”.
Officers will be educating drivers as well, and a hot topic of conversation will likely be upcoming changes to impaired driving laws.
After October 26 any driver who blows over .05 will lose their license for at least a week.
Constable Steve Squires is with the RCMP traffic services division. He says they will be focusing on keeping the roads safe.
“Operation Impact is a safety campaign that’s held across Canada to educate and enforce the main causes of serious collisions,” he said. “Those are basically impaired driving, seatbelt use and aggressive driving.”
One thing police will likely be discussing with drivers is upcoming changes to the province’s impaired driving laws.
Starting October 26, drivers who blow over .05 will have their licenses suspended for seven days on a first suspension.
If they’re caught again it’s a 15 day suspension.
A third offence will result in a month long break from driving.
There’s a financial cost as well, suspended drivers will have to pay a reinstatement fee of almost $90 to get their license back.
Constable Squires says they want to encourage drivers to call 911 if they suspect someone is driving under the influence.
