Delaying new emission rules jeopardizes environment: report

The Dexter government is coming under fire for delaying the implementation of tougher emissions standards at Nova Scotia’s coal-fired power plants.
In a new report, the Canadian Centre for Policy Alternatives says allowing Nova Scotia Power to keep burning cheaper, dirtier coal costs consumers less, and is a lot less costly politically.
But the report’s authors say the NDP government could be jeopardizing our environment.
Earlier this year NSP said it would have to hike residential rates by 12 per cent to afford meeting tough new emissions standards next year.
The provincial government responded by pushing the deadline for meeting those emissions to 2014.
Next week Nova Scotia Power will propose a rate increase of 6.5 per cent.
