Discovery Centre finds new home

The Discovery Centre is getting a big donation and a new place to operate in a couple of years.
“We’ve been looking for a new location for quite some time now,” says the centre’s program director Jill Wagner. “We’re essentially busting at the seams here at our current location on Barrington Street.”
The centre which focuses on getting kids interested in science and technology is slated to move into the new Nova Scotia Power building that’s under construction on the waterfront.
“They had been looking for a partner to occupy some of the space they had in their new headquarters on Lower Water Street,” she says. “And they felt that we’d be a natural fit for them.”
In fact the utility was one of the founding members of the non-profit centre 25 years ago.
The 40,000 square foot space will be donated rent-free for 25 years. Wagner says it will help them provide more programming because they’re operating in half that space and their current Barrington Street rent is not cheap.
It will be three years until the Centre moves into its new home. Wagner says they’re getting a clean slate, so they will begin to decide how many floors and rooms they want to incorporate into the design.
