Ship back in port after springing a leak

HALIFAX – A fishing vessel taking in water off southern Nova Scotia used a pump dropped to it by a rescue aircraft to stay afloat as it safely returned to harbour Saturday.

A spokesman for the rescue co-ordination centre in Halifax says the Bickerton Pride was about 150 kilometres south of Yarmouth when it started leaking on Friday.

A Canadian Hercules aircraft and a U.S. Coast Guard jet were sent out to drop three pumps to the vessel.

Cmdr. Mike Considine, the public affairs officer for the rescue co-ordination centre, said the pumps ensured the vessel stayed afloat as it motored to Liverpool, N.S.

Considine says that the vessel made harbour at about 4:15 p.m., and that all 15 on board were safe and sound. He says the coast guard ship Edward Cornwallis monitored the fishing vessel as she steamed to harbour.
