Tougher drunk driving charges now in effect

On average, 22 people every year are killed across the province because of impaired driving.
Starting today, tougher legislation goes into effect when it comes to Nova Scotians who get caught drinking and driving.
Transportation Minister Bill Estabrooks says they passed the new law last fall and the tougher penalties start today.
“This is an important time of year as we look at coming towards the Christmas vacation,” he said. “I know it sounds like it might be a ways off but we want this legislation out there so people can get used to the fact that under no circumstances are we in any way going to condone drinking and driving in this province.”
Estabrooks says a breathalyzer reading between .05 and .08 means, you walk for a week. You’ll get 15 days for the second offence and 30 days for the third.
“The so-called ‘good old days’ when drinking and driving did take place, that’s just not the way, we’re going to continue to operate in Nova Scotia,” he said. “Beware, be careful and more importantly don’t drink and drive.”
You’ll have to pay a fee of about $90 to get your license back.
