BC Place roof replacement project on track

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – The head of PavCo says BC Place‘s new roof is still on time and on budget. More than half of the giant steel mass needed to hold up the retractable roof is now in place.

PavCo’s boss David Podmore has a construction update. “At this time, we have 20 of the large vertical masts up. We have started to install what is known as the compression bin, the horizontal member that ties these together.”

With sixteen more masts to go, he says it’s going to feel like a brand new stadium when it opens next fall because the interior is being redone as well. The old dome roof was deflated back in April.

The stadium is in the midst of a $465-million renovation that will make it the anchor of a major entertainment development. The revamped venue will be home to the BC Lions and the Vancouver Whitecaps, when they enter MLS in 2011.
