A tale of two sides: Convention centre developer, opponents speak

The group against a new convention center in downtown Halifax brought in an expert to tell the media why it shouldn’t happen.

An hour later, the man who wants to build it made his case in a public meeting to a group of meeting professionals.

Dr. Heywood Saunders from Texas was invited by the Save The View Coalition to speak on the business case for the proposed meeting space.

He says there are too many convention centers across North America competing for dwindling business.

He’ll be holding a public session Monday night at St. Mary’s School of Business.

Later, Joe Ramia spoke about his proposed “Nova Center Complex” saying it’s a mixed-use facility with financial benefits for the economy of the city, and the province.

And he adds it will help save heritage buildings by bringing density to the downtown core creating demand for office space.

The province has already offered its support to the project. The city is still discussing it and there’s been no word from the federal government about its financial investment.
