Man dead after two separate shootings in HRM

A 20-year-old man is dead after being shot in Spryfield Friday evening.

“At 8:37 p.m., police responded to a call of an injured man in the 100 block of Lavender Walk,” says Cst. Brian Palmeter in a late-night release. “Upon arrival, officers found a 20-year-old Halifax man who had been shot. He was transported to hospital by ambulance where he was pronounced deceased a short time later.”

Police wouldn’t say where the man was shot. There have been 11 murders in Halifax in 2010.

Police also didn’t release the identity of the 20-year-old but the Chronicle-Herald reports the victim is Brandon Lewis Hatcher, who was just released from jail. Hatcher had faced 13 charges including two counts of attempted murder from an October 2009 shooting.

During a court appearance shortly after the shooting, Hatcher’s girlfriend smuggled a knife into the Spring Garden Road courthouse and attacked another woman. Nobody was hurt.

All 13 charges were discharged by the judge in the case after there was insufficient evidence to proceed.

When police received the call about the Lavender Walk shooting, investigators were already dealing with another shooting in Cowie Hill. At around 6 p.m., police were called to the Queen Elizabeth Health Sciences Centre after a 22-year-old man arrived there with a gunshot wound.

That man is still in hospital but police say his wounds are non-life threatening.

Police are urging anyone with information to call 490-5016 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS.
