LOWER MAINLAND (NEWS1130) – Police say gang tensions have been very high ever since a gangster was gunned down in the Metrotown parking lot. They believe recent arrests have prevented more people from being hurt in the crossfire.
“Our concern for public safety was significantly increased while this tension was palpable,” says Sgt. Shinder Kirk with the Gang Task Force, who points out the threat to public safety was especially bad through October and early November.
“We saw an escalation and the potential for significant violence on our streets. The tensions and instability were marked. There was intelligence and information that there may be further violence,” he adds.
The general increased threat prompted Vancouver Police to issue a special public warning over the Halloween weekend.
Police Suppression
Six arrests have been made over the past few weeks: Pedram Taromi Nejad Shirazi, 26; Christopher Henry Iser, 26; Derek James Stephen, 27; Christopher Jai Reddy, 25; Robert Joshua Achadinha, 27; and Glen Hartley Tetsuji Sheck, 29, have charges pending against them.
Guns, cash, counterfeit money, night vision goggles, and body armour have been seized.
Kirk says five other known gang members have left BC. “These individuals decided, either for a number of personal safety reasons, or because of the police attention, or both, they decided they would leave the country.”
Kirk says there is still tension on the streets and police are hoping to make more arrests.
