Suspect in ex-Hell’s Angel cold case seeks protective custody

The lawyer for a man charged in connection with the death of a former Hell’s Angel says his client needs protective custody.

During a court appearance in Truro on Tuesday, Gerald McCabe’s lawyer asked that McCabe be transferred out of the Burnside Jail in Dartmouth to a facility in Amherst or Antigonish.

The judge agreed to make the recommendation, but the final decision rests with federal corrections officials.

Last week, McCabe was charged with accessory to murder after the fact in Randy Mersereau’s death.

Mersereau disappeared in October 1999. Police searching a property near Truro last week found human remains on Sunday.

McCabe returns to court on January 11.
