More than 15,000 people are still in the dark following Tuesday’s storm.
Most of the remaining outages are in the Annapolis Valley, where strong winds ripped off roofs and siding and hundreds of trees were uprooted, with some landing on vehicles and buildings.
Berwick resident Wayne Murray says the destruction is unlike anything he’s ever seen.
“I was in the insurance business for 40-some years,” he said. “I’ve seen a lot of damage and I’ve been involved in a lot of claims, but I’ve never seen winds that strong.”
More than a dozen seniors had to be evacuated when part of their home was torn away by the 100-km an hour winds.
Jim Oickle, maintenance manager at the Kingsway Gardens seniors home, says the roof collapse was a frightening experience.
“It was almost like thunder when it dropped, it was just one big boom,” he said. “Then I started getting quite concerned because I realized if the rest of the wall gave way, our pool is basically going to cave in. And within five minutes, the other part of the wall did let go.”
About 130 mm of rain fell in the valley, compared to about 47mm in metro.
