Neons? Really? Atlantic car thieves target completely different models than elsewhere

When it comes to stolen vehicles in the Atlantic Region, it seems thieves prefer an old, no-longer-made Dodge and a few 4-wheel drive pick-up trucks.
Bill Adams with the Insurance Bureau of Canada says the top two most popular vehicles stolen in our region are the 1998 2-door and 1998 4-door Dodge/Plymouth Neon.
Adams says they’re mostly stolen for joy-riding, but are sometimes taken for parts.
He says people steal vehicles for different reasons. “Many are stolen to commit other crimes and increasingly what we are seeing is organized crime stealing some of the higher end vehicles,” he says.
Luxury cars tend to be picked off more often in other parts of Canada, where two-door Honda Civics and Cadillac Escalades are a couple of the most stolen vehicles.
Adams also notes 20 percent of vehicles stolen in Atlantic Canada had the keys in the ignition.
