Midday snowfall leads to highway chaos

Highway crashes were numerous midday on Friday as a steady snowfall made roads slippery and drivers found it difficult to adjust to the conditions.

“Be patient with many road closures and diversions to drive much slower than you think you should,” advised News95.7 traffic reporter Brett Ruskin.

Halifax District RCMP had Highway 102 closed briefly due to slippery road conditions.

Listener Mark Christopher phoned on the way to the airport, where he spotted several crashes including a mini-van rollover.

“The 102, the 118 are just slick,” said Christopher. “People are driving way too fast, and if Highways don’t get out here, they’re going to have somebody dead here today.”

“The roads are like sheer ice. Yeah, there are some idiots out here,” said listener Pamela Stewart. “But the city needs to get the salt trucks out.”

We received reports that police had closed Highway 118 because of poor conditions. Highway 111 in Dartmouth was closed between Portland Street and Main because ofa  crash involving three cars and a large truck.

The Bedford highway was clogged due to volume and weather.

A car was on its roof at the top of Magazine Hill.
