Code Purple continues at IWK

The baby business is still booming at the IWK Health Centre.
Earlier this month a Code Purple was declared at the hospital’s neonatal intensive care unit, meaning they’re well over capacity.
Not much has changed, as recently as Thursday 52 newborns were there for specialized care. Nine more than the unit was designed to handle.
The hospital is alleviating the demand on resources and staff by transferring some of the babies to the IWK’s pediatric ward and other specialized care units around the province.
Director of children’s programs, Kate Mahon tells the Herald HRM’s high birth rate and technology that improves infant survival rates are among the causes for the congestion.
She also noted that the unit would never turn away a newborn in need.
