Dartmouth Bus Terminal project loses pedestrian footpath

It doesn’t have a set cost, or even a set design, but the plans for the Dartmouth Bus Terminal do continue to change.

On Tuesday, city staff working on the project told councillors there won’t be a pedestrian footpath anymore and that was just one of the changes.

The green roof will still be there, but an elevator that was in the original design has been removed.

Another alteration to the design will see the entire structure built at an elevation five feet higher than originally planned, because the construction site is right on top of pyritic rock which is extremely expensive to remove.

Building the structure higher up means less of the rock will need to be moved, saving money.

Cost cutting was the main theme of the new changes, but Manager of Facility Development Terry Gallagher says the basic plan is still the same, “It really doesn’t affect the overall scope of the project that’s been presented to the community. The sighting of the building is the same and the number of bus lanes is the same.”

Metro Transit officials say they’ll be getting final drawings of the revised plan sometime early next week.
