Public continues to help police catch drunk drivers

People don’t seem to be getting the message about drinking and driving. Within the HRM, 44 people were charged with impaired driving in December 2010. That’s just about on par with previous months.
Halifax Regional Police Cst. Brian Palmeter tells News 95.7 the public is playing a big role in helping get those impaired drivers off the road. Last month, 43 percent of all cases were reported by concerned citizens.
“All citizens have a role and can have an impact on the people who make the decision to drink and drive,” Palmeter says. “Certainly having those extra eyes on the road helps police identify and catch impaired drivers. So, we’re very grateful for that assistance and we ask people to continue to call when they believe someone is impaired.”
In five cases last month, an impaired driver was charged following a collision. One of the crashes involved a woman rear-ending a marked police cruiser.
